Our 2015 Advent theme this is “Grace”. We will be looking at the ways in which Mary, Mother of Jesus, experienced the grace of God. Like last year, we are looking for images of grace that will help us remember the weekly themes. Here is some direction for you to begin thinking about that…
Nov. 29: The Grace of Waiting: Mary was waiting on the Lord, and waiting for the birth of Jesus. It wasn’t an easy wait. How have you learned to “wait”? Another way to think about this is how have you learned to be patient? Is there an object or image that captures that?
Dec. 6: The Grace of Presence: Mary experienced the presence of God in many ways. How have you experienced God’s presence in your life? During a time of trial, or of joy? Is there an object or image that captures that?
Dec. 13: The Grace of Action: Mary said yes to the call of God. She said, “I am the handmaid of the Lord”. How have you served in such a way that it led you to know that God is at work? How has the Lord used you to touch another’s life? Is there an object or image that captures that?
Dec. 20: The Grace of Fulfillment: What prayer of yours has been answered? Is there an object or image that captures that?
We are Looking forward to hearing about how God has been at work in our church family!

Mt Bethel Community Garden contributed over 200 pounds of fresh produce to Neighbors Inc. food shelf in South St. Paul the summer of 2015.
Tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, swiss chard, kale, carrots, onions, red cabbage, bell peppers, beets, brussels sprouts, broccoli, zucchini, egg plant, and a variety of herbs occupied the three 4’ by 16’ raised beds. Cucumber, pole beans and winter squash were planted on the three mounts along the west side of the garden.
A crew led by Pastor Dave constructed the raised beds and fenced in the 28’ by 25’ garden space behind Mt. Bethel Church the first part of May, 2015. Plants and seeds went in the following week and planting was completed by May 8, 2015. The garden was dedicated on Sunday, May 10, 2015.
The first harvest happened on June 8 followed by a weekly delivery until September 18, 2015. The garden was cleaned up and put to sleep the weekend of September 20, 2015. All garden waste was composted at the southwest corner of the garden. Next spring it will be ready to be distributed back to the raised beds to nourish the 2016 garden. Extra specail gratitude to gardener Niki G and the garden ministry caretakers.

2015 Mid-Year Charge Conference Vision Casting-Pastor Dave June 17, 2015
2014-2015: Last year We had determined that we would focus on Community Compassion, Small Groups and Celebrations/Worship. An on going discussion in Administrative Council would take place as we determined our Core Values….
So… how did we do… what’s next? We continue to serve at Hilltop Elementary School, our “signature” ministry. The latest win there is that they asked us (instead of vice versa) to come and help with the first day of summer school. There were 4 of us, but we got the job done. Thanks to Mary A., Polly T. and Terry A. We have a list of potential things to do at Hilltop Elm., our Teams just need to discern what the best way to serve is going to be with the people and time we have. We are expecting that a few of us will get into the classrooms this year for extra help for the teachers.
We also established our community garden that has produced 12 pounds of food so far for the Neighbors Food Shelf. This could become a great ministry as we share in the work and look for ways to share the harvest.
Our Night to Unite on August 4, (hosting neighborhood National Night Out) will be another step in helping our nearby neighbors recognize us, experience us and hopefully gain some insight into our hearts about what we think Church is. We will need everyone to participate and join us! Our pastoral intern David Hodd is developing a plan for distributing flyers about our church and communicating Night to Unite host site to our neighbors.
In regard to Classes/Small Groups we had very successful Church 2 groups meet for almost half of a year, with around 40 people participating. Pastor’s Bible Study on Wednesdays has also had a good core of attendance of 5-8. We could do more in this area. We have three volunteer hosts for Church 2 again and we should expect more ways to grow in community and faith in the coming weeks.
Our worship attendance has been up significantly over last year, 16%. Our worship planning team did a great job again with special Sundays and church holidays. We will keep building on that.
Our Administrative Council isn’t changing a whole lot personnel wise but we have decided that every other months we will spend the meeting time reflecting on vision/mission/values of our church body and look to do ministry and move forward based on those things that are most important to us. We have good leaders in our congregation who will continue to lead us forward as we tackle all the issues that are before us.
We are making good progress in a number of areas. I would expect that 2015-2016 year is going to be another great year for us.
God bless you richly in these days! Pastor David Brown

Confirmation is an important step in the spiritual life of students. They are confirming the vows that their parents made when they were baptized. They are declaring for themselves their desire to follow Jesus.
Sunday, May 31, Shelby Gregg and Logan Tschida took the step of Confirmation. I have met with them a number of times to have conversation about what it means to follow Jesus, to be part of the church universal, to be part of this congregation. Shelby and Logan both attended STORM with me last summer (2014) and put into practice “serving Jesus by serving others”. I think they are growing in their understanding of what following Jesus is about. These two are good students, very active in their school and their sports. Throughout their lives they will have the opportunity to influence hundreds of people. |
As Logan and Shelby take this step of Confirmation, and as they grow and mature in their faith and in their lives, they will need our prayers and our interest. Our responsibility as the body of Christ is to nurture and care for them now so they have a good vision of what a healthy, vibrant congregation is like. In the future, they will be participants in the same.
I count it a privilege to get to know such great young people as Shelby and Logan. Let’s celebrate with them as they declare their desire today to follow Jesus. Pastor Dave.

Sunday, April
26th we filled our sanctuary for "Friend Day" 10a Worship. Our planned "Friend Day" worship became an opportunity to invite and bring a friend to experience the fellowship and spiritual
passion of our congregation and worship. Some brought a family member, some a
neighbor, and some a church member who hasn't been to MB for a while... The month of April Pastor Dave's messages focused on
"Friendship.”

Sunday, April 19th
Two adult Baptisms and new members joined Mount Bethel United Methodist Church. One of the things that gives life to a congregation is new people attending and participating. We are always blessed when that happens and especially so when they make the commitment to officially become part of our body through membership. We are blessed to witness 2 adult baptisms and receive 7 new members to Mount Bethel Church. Baptisms of Sarah E and Al O. New members Jeff & Penny F, Sarah E & Dave E, Al O, Deb S and Joe B. These seven are bringing new life to our church. Let us continue to be welcoming and gracious to new comers and look for ways to invite our friends and neighbors to worship. |

March 2015 our neighbors down the street, Hilltop Elementary celebrated Read Across America Day, an annual celebration of reading on author Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Pastor Dave, Judy A. and Mary A. along with other community and district leaders read The Cat in The Hat Comes Back by Dr. Seuss to each Hilltop classroom. Of course each reader wore the traditional red & white hat worn by the popular character “the cat in the hat”. Hilltop’s Read Across America celebration concluded with a school-wide assembly where Hilltop acknowledged “our friends at Mt Bethel”. Thank you Pastor, Judy & Mary for reading.
February 2015 Mt Bethel Church and Hilltop Elementary School partnered in gathering food shelf items. Pastor Dave and Lisa appreciate daily prayers for the following....
Email update: Friday, 2/6/2015 4:09pm Hello friends, Thanks for the prayers. Lisa and I continue to be healthy and safe. We have eaten well slept well and worked pretty hard in the 85-95 degree heat. It has been a good trip in most ways. We dedicated two homes this afternoon about 16x24' and the families receiving them were very grateful. We finished the well work yesterday. Two teams go out each checking the 90 + wells they have installed. We repaired quite a few closed some others and installed 10 or so new ones. Lisa and I mostly did well team but she also had good experiences two days with the sewing team We also poured and leveled a floor in a newly built church building and are helping another congregation get theirs up. That was the other half of today building forms and tiring together rebar for the top of the church shell. Not sure what it is called but it will be one continuous concrete pour around the top we may help there tomorrow again do inventory of the container supplies attend a meeting of the cane fire board ... Then church on Sunday barbeque at one of the truck drivers homes on Sunday afternoon. Looks like Monday will be a free day so we are hoping to go to the beach with our friends. The people have been very good at helping the team and working alongside of us. It really has been great. Have been working on my limited Spanish will be glad to get home even though it is cold! God bless you all today. We love you! D
Pastor Dave and Lisa appreciate daily prayers for the following....
- Safe travel to and from the Dominican Republic as well as within the country as there is much travel to and from mission sites.
- For all 26 team members to bond well, work together well, and have fun together...that we would model healthy Christian community.
- That the language barriers would be minimized.
- That the team would always have servant hearts and recognize that we are there to share life with brothers and sisters in Christ.
- That the team would be healthy and not susceptible to any illness, or disease.
- That all family/work issues “at home” would be resolved and/or put on hold during the two week trip so that each team member can focus on the Kingdom work at hand.
- That the blessing of: 11 new wells built, church pews installed, 2 homes built, church floor installed and church exterior stuccoed (3 different congregations), $2500 worth of Bibles distributed, 6 days of sewing classes in 6 different locations would be of great encouragement and cause for celebration in the Lord for the people of DR and for us!
- That Lisa and Pastor Dave would enjoy serving together and not being in charge!
- Warm welcome to Rev. Dana (Williams) Scopatz as she serves Mt Bethel's mission field in Pastor Dave's absence.

an email update from Pastor Dave 2/2/2015 (Monday 4:53am)
….. Thanks for all the prayers! Things are going well here. All but two have been healthy and those two recovered quickly. We put in seven concrete pads for wells last week and will complete these this week. Church pews have been built and delivered. A very large church floor has been laid. Mixing concrete by hand of course. There have been rafters made and walls put up on two homes and another church building. Previously dug wells (90) have been checked and repaired. A sewing team has gone out every day to teach and train. We are accomplishing all we have set out to do. God is good and plentiful. Went to worship at local church yesterday that had interpretation for us. Was good. A medical team from Kansas was there as well. So, Keep praying for us. Lisa and I are doing well. Weather has been warm but often cloudy and sprinkled now and then. Went to beach yesterday (Sunday) and it poured rain! That's all for now. Project Canefire has a Facebook page where you might be able to see recent pics. D. |
